The American Beverage Association (ABA) launched a campaign against New York Gov. David Paterson’s proposal to raise taxes on regular soda and juice drinks by 18 percent. The tax is intended to fight obesity.
The ABA claims the tax is a regressive measure that will mainly hurt those least able to pay. It claims the budget proposal expands the 5 -cent sper-container bottle bill tax to include bottled water and juices, again adding to the family grocery bill.
The budget also calls for new taxes or tax hikes on clothing, shoes, gasoline, auto insurance, health insurance, health care, beer, wine, cable and satellite TV, bus and taxi rides, and movies.
“The ABA strongly dismisses as a faade the state’s claims that the soft drink tax is meant to prevent obesity, as singling out one product is not going to make a dent in such a complex problem as obesity,” the ABA claims in a statement

MANY may think interest in motors is a male thing, but women are keen on cars as well, according to a poll. As many as 44 per cent of women discuss cars with their friends and 64 per cent watch the Top Gear programme, the survey from car insurance company Diamond found. Also, 73 per cent of women know how to check their vehicle’s oil and water levels and tyre pressures.
The poll also revealed that fewer than three per cent of women would choose a car based on its colour, with economy and price the main reasons for opting for a particular model. While eight per cent of women ensure they have make-up in their glove compartment, nearly twice as many (15 per cent) keep a torch to hand and 12 per cent have a road map in the car.
Diamond managing director Sian Lewis said: “Our research shows many of the stereotypes you hear about women drivers are very much outdated and untrue.

At every step of my life and my career as an attorney, a juvenile court judge and as the Independent Ombudsman for the Texas Youth Commission, I have upheld the spirit and the letter of the law. My professional commitment to the protection, prevention and rehabilitation of our children is also my personal passion.
Of the many concerns that people have communicated to me in my role as the Independent Ombudsman, one of the most disturbing was the issue of security in our juvenile facilities. I passed along those concerns to the Commission’s Executive Director and a directive went out to improve oversight. I can attest that security screenings at the facilities have begun to improve. In fact, during one of my visits, security officers found a very small Swiss Army knife that I had completely forgotten was in my handbag. What should have been the simple matter of disposing of it, has now become a much more serious issue. It was a regrettable mistake. I am very sorry it happened, but I am now prepared to defend myself until this is resolved. I am confident that I did not violate the law.
The Texas juvenile justice system is in critical need of scrutiny and reform, and I take my responsibilities for leading this effort with gravity and humility. Venezuelan government shuts down 4 banks

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s government closed four banks Monday, saying authorities uncovered major financial problems after taking over management due to irregularities in their operations.
Two of the banks, Canarias and ProVivienda (BanPro), will be permanently closed and their assets auctioned off, Finance Minister Ali Rodriguez said. Most deposits in those banks will be covered by the state deposit insurance fund while the banks are liquidated, he said.
Authorities will try to rehabilitate the other two banks, Confederado and Bolivar, because their financial problems seem surmountable, Rodriguez said.

The banks, which account for 5.7 percent of Venezuela’s banking sector, were taken over by the government Nov. 20, citing various violations. At the time, officials said the banks would remain open while authorities investigated.
“The damage caused has been of such severity that it has severely compromised the solvency of those institutions,” Rodriguez told state television. He said the closures were necessary because the deposit withdrawals were reaching “very dangerous dimensions” that threatened to create “even more damage for the entire system.”
Two people have been arrested in the scandal: Key investor Ricardo Fernandez and his lawyer, Jose Camacho, are charged with misappropriating deposits and providing loans to other businesses in which they were investors.
The four banks were purchased in September and October by a group of investors headed by Fernandez, who is involved in the food industry and sold products to a network of state-run subsidized markets known as Mercal.
Opponents of President Hugo Chavez blamed the problem on what they charged was corruption involving Fernandez, other business people and government officials. The government did not immediately respond to the claim, and no representatives of Fernandez were available for comment.
Authorities have said investors were unable to show the origins of the funds used to buy the banks, among other violations.
As of October, about a third of the total $6.7 billion in deposits at the four banks had been put there by state entities, according to the banks’ financial statements.
Government entities holding deposits included the National Treasury; the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA; and the National Development Bank, among other entities. The financial impact on the government remained unclear.
The announcement of the banks’ closure came a day after the president threatened to nationalize any banks that violate regulations, saying he would do whatever needed to prevent irregularities.
Chavez’s government has sought a bigger state role in the banking sector, and in May agreed to buy the formerly private-run Banco de Venezuela from Spain’s Grupo Santander for about $1 billion. The government now owns five commercial banks, which together account for about 21 percent of deposits and 16 percent of loans.
